I suppose I rather take it for granted when I’m out and about on the farm – that I’m surrounded by a vivid patchwork of vibrant yellow stretching right across the landscape.
But it struck me today, when I noticed how particularly resplendent the rape crop looked contrasted against the clear blue sky, that perhaps I ought to be sharing this visual feast with you. so you can see for yourselves how Heart of Gold starts its life…
The crops are looking fantastic at the moment, though rain is desperately needed now (typical farmer aren’t I, always grumbling about the weather – but it really is true after four weeks without any at all!) to plump up the pods. We’ll start pressing this lot in August, and I think it’s got great potential for a deliciously tasty oil!
Just to give you a few days’ advance warning this time – I’ll be doing a tasting session at Waitrose in Stamford onĀ Saturday 30 April from around 11am until 1pm, so do come along and say hello!
If you’re already a fan of Heart of Gold, why not pick up a leaflet with some recipe ideas or, if you’ve never tried rapeseed oil before, then why not swing by and find out what you’ve been missing all this time!
Look forward to seeing you there!
No, this is not an April Fool’s joke, we are absolutely serious! So serious in fact that it’s not even yours truly doing the sampling: Tesco has enlisted the services of a professional company to conduct the tastings, at a number of venues simultaneously.
Here’s the schedule – please do try to pop along, as I’m sure once you’ve tasted our delicious Heart of Gold rapeseed oil for yourselves, you’ll be a convert. Not only is it scrummy, hot or cold, it’s healthy & nutritious too – as well as being a local British product, low in food miles (but high in flavour)!
Cleethorpes Extra Friday 1 April
Leicester Extra Friday 1 April
Mansfield Extra Saturday 2 April
Leicester Hamilton Extra Saturday 2 April
Long Eaton Extra Sunday 3 April
Nottingham Top Valley Sunday 3 April
Hope you can make one of these dates… let us know what you think about our glorious golden oil…
We were positively overjoyed to learn that Heart of Gold rapeseed oil had been selected in a blind tasting organised by Stella magzine (The Sunday Telegraph)! What an endorsement!
Top London Chef, Tristan Welch, uses only rapeseed oil in his kitchen at Launceston Place (http://www.launcestonplace-restaurant.co.uk) in Kensington W8, so who better qualified to pass judgement in a blind tasting of ten rapeseed oils from all over the country?
We are absolutely thrilled (and gratified!) that Heart of Gold was one of the three rapeseed oils to make his final shortlist. He noted that its ‘faintly nutty smell develops into a delicate flavour of fresh wild herbs’, adding this wonderfully evocative comment, which we’ll probably be repeating ad infinitum:
‘It tastes just like a summer’s day!’
Tristan loves the unique flavour of rapeseed oil – instead of the fruitiness of olive oil it has a distinct earthiness – and he also loves the fact that it’s made in Britain.
Our thanks to Stella magazine and to Tristan Welch, and our congratulations to the other two shortlisted companies as well. Let’s fly the flag for wholesome, healthy, homegrown products!
A great honour indeed, to be singled out for an interview for the 10 March issue of Waitrose Weekend! I did the interview over the phone, and it’s always difficult to tell how these things have gone, but I’m really delighted with the feature – and hugely proud that Heart of Gold has been given such wonderful national coverage!
Rather than me elaborate further, I’ve inserted the article here so you can read it for yourselves…
